"Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says, ‘I am in the light’ while hating a brother or a sister is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling."
-1 John 2:8-10
There are, in this physical world, things we think we understand which, really, we don't. Time, for example - what is it? And gravity? And light?
Light consists of packets of energy which behave like waves and can travel infinitely through space/time at the ‘speed of light’ without loss of energy - what is that? Our eyes receive some of these packets of energy, and our brains analyze and interpret them, and we see the source of light as a candle or a light bulb or the sun. The light from these sources illuminates the physical world bathed by their energy and with that light we can perceive the table or the room or our path - but only if we look.
We have an incomplete but functionally sufficient understanding of light of the physical plane, but what of the spiritual realm which we see as through a glass darkly? What is the “true light that is already shining”? Is it not the Love of God manifested in Jesus Christ? The Love that streams from Him to all His creation and to each of us individually. A love like a parent has for a child. A love like that which would cause a person to die for another. A Love greater than both of these together. The Love the Lord shared in the Beginning with the Word - the Light that filled the darkness of the void and can overcome the darkness of our hearts.
But we must choose the Light. We must embrace God's Holy Spirit of Love and choose to walk in the Light to emerge from the Darkness. Our words are not enough. He commands us to examine our hearts and seek transformation so that we might live lives which reflect and radiate, to this darkened world, His sacrificial Gift - His omnipotent Love and His spiritual Light made physical flesh - for us - in that dark stable.
Look – do you see Him?
Most Holy Giver of Life
We who live in darkness cry out to you for Light - the Light of your boundless, unquenchable, sacrificial Love that can fill our hearts and keep us from stumbling on our spiritual and physical journey. Forgive us for and save us from our blindness and help us to strive to lead lives as true followers of Christ, radiating your love to our brothers and sisters - for Your Glory.
